Unexpectedly!

We haven't had a good "UNEXPECTEDLY!" lately, so let's travel across the pond for the unexpectedly good economic news out of the UK.
U.K. services growth unexpectedly accelerated to the fastest pace in 16 years in October as the economy showed signs of pulling away from the rest of Europe.
A gauge of activity rose to 62.5 from 60.3 in September, the highest since May 1997, Markit Economics said today in London. The report came as the European Commission forecast the U.K. economy will grow 2.2 percent next year, twice the pace of the euro area and more than Germany and France.
Unexpected because the journalistic and policy elite believe deeply in all manner of Keynesian nonsense.  Elites have spouted rubbish for years now (from the Cameron government's first day to be precise) about how ever-so-slightly reining in Britain's atrocious budget deficits and debt would bring a hellfire of economic woe.  (Of course, I predicted the silliness.)  Cameron's Britain has been one of the few European governments to even attempt to get a handle on fiscal policy in a responsible and logical way by cutting profligacy and wastefulness.  The results are encouraging and the elites scratch their heads, 'Gee, that's unexpected.'

Precisely the opposite of what is going on here - fiscally disastrous Keynesian spending nuttiness and it's "unexpected" when the economy sputters.

Maybe it's time to reevaluate how they set their own expectations?  Nah.

Unexpectedly, The Absolute Most Expected Thing Happened

I nailed it.  I said the media will revive their silly "unexpectedly" bullshit in Obama's second term.  Yes I did.
Here we stand on the cusp of Obama 2.0 with all it portends - unrelenting expansion and entrenchment of the $1.3 trillion in-the-red-annually entitlement Leviathan coupled with raging anti-business fervor - and news of economic malaise is still "unexpected".  Good f**king God
....
The media pulled off a remarkable feat for over four years, incessantly advancing the notion that with a completely clueless economic illiterate, who never had a real job, occupying the White House, some how, some way, inexplicably, economic data was persistently disappointing.  Now, with four more years of malaise at best teed up, is the MSM is going to try to keeping foisting this on us.  Obama 2.0 is Obama Unleashed and yet somehow, some way these economic statistics remain peskily malaise-ish.  Unexpected indeed.  The corruption in the MSM is galling, they are simply too willfully blind to see.
Sure enough. And the Good Professor adds a dollop of the requisite snark.
RECOVERY SUMMER! Retail Sales Fall . . . wait for it, wait for it . . . Unexpectedly! “Retail sales in the U.S. unexpectedly fell in March by the most in nine months as employment slowed, showing households ended the first quarter on softer footing.”

Yeah Baby...The U Word Is Back!

Oh how I've missed this.  But never fear, "unexpectedly" is back.
"Retail Sales in U.S. Unexpectedly Fell 0.4% in January"
This could be the one word to describe the Obama presidency for the history books - we elected a radical, America-hating socialist who's never had a real job, who nobody has ever heard of, and who rose from the precincts of the deeply corrupt Chicago political machine...and all this bad shit befell the nation...totally unexpectedly.

Morning Miscellany

Wow. Maybe the lawyers defending this suit don't talk to the higher ups, but it appears the Obama administration is not walking back this disastrous drilling moratorium, as I had suspected. This is terrible economic policy, as noted by me (and a panel of experts), but it is also bad politics. Obama pleases a fringe slice of his base while putting thousands out of work when his administration and his party need every last job that they can find going into midterm elections and beyond. Secondarily, the last thing he needs is higher oil prices. He is playing with the white hot type of political fire here, unemployment and gas prices, and on present course he's gonna get badly burned.

Jim Chanos is shorting Ford because the UAW is both inside Ford and in the Board Room at GM and Chrysler. Where did I hear before that this might be a problem?

Doug Schoen and Pat Caddell, Democrats both, take to the pages of the WSJ to analyze the anti-incumbent political landscape and their opening line is this: "The most important story from last week's primary elections is that, for the first time in recent memory, inexperience has become a badge of honor, as opposed to an impediment to winning office." I have never heard such a piece of news that makes me more optimistic about the health of our nation as this!!

Put aside for a minute our thuggish, mafia-like Presidential administration (not to say that it is not a BIG issue, but put it aside anyway), I am beginning to see the potential brilliance in BP's acquiescence to the $20 billion escrow account. They may owe more eventually, but it'll be years before the final number is known. In the meantime the $20 billion is teed up, and when there is an outcry over how it is dispensed (and there will be inevitably, but especially when you throw the government's famed efficiency at it), BP can safely (and happily) say "Hey man, talk to the government, they are in charge." BP has thus bought immunity from voluminous bad press and outrageous outrage for years to come over who gets money, how much money and when they get it. Once again the government is brimming with the false bravado of having won a battle when the war is looking quite bleak for them.

You've heard of the "Five Biggest Lies", the first of which is "the check is in the mail"? Well, we have a sixth. Coming from the Obama administration, it is "We're open to good ideas from all sources, and will be working with Senators on a comprehensive proposal." This is utter bullsit that no one believes this any more, if they were stupid enough to believe it ever.

The jobs numbers out today let the rightosphere (and libertarianoshere) continue to indulge in their favorite running joke..."Unexpectedly!" For those who don't get the joke, the media keeps pointing to negative news about jobs and the economy as if it all was somehow inexplicable, anomalously incongruent with Obama's genius, wizardry, and deep understanding of our economy. But there are those of us who actually know what the disastrous policies coming out of Washington DC are doing and will do to our economy...and the bad news is far from "Unexpected." Case in point, I said the gratuitous attack on the credit card industry would reduce consumer credit, limiting consumer spending. Check. Today's shocking cause and effect item...the free checking account is disappearing, because of new regulatory costs imposed on banks. Go figure. Will the MSM be using this "Unexpectedly" meme when they all go the way of the dodo like Newsweek? I can just see the headline now "New York Times Unexpectedly Goes into Chapter 11?"

Finally, in honor of the circus being conducted in Washington DC today with politicians berating BP, we have another gem from Ramirez.

Unexpectedly!

"More Americans unexpectedly applied for jobless benefits last week, a sign the labor market recovery may be slowing."

Yes. Totally. Unexpected.

Why Don't ObamaCare Disaster Stories Have the MSM Trademark "Unexpectedly"??

Why didn't this bit of news get the MSM's now trademark rhetorical flourish of bewilderment..."Unexpectedly"? I mean, it qualifies in that it: 1) is a negative result from the foolish policies emanating from this administration and the congressional Democrats, and 2) was, like totally expected.

MSM Will Give "Unexpectedly" Another Shot In Obama 2.0

Here we stand on the cusp of Obama 2.0 with all it portends - unrelenting expansion and entrenchment of the $1.3 trillion in-the-red-annually entitlement Leviathan coupled with raging anti-business fervor - and news of economic malaise is still "unexpected".  Good f**king God.

Jobless Claims in U.S. Unexpectedly Increased Last Week

More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, a sign improvement in the labor market remains uneven.
Jobless claims increased by 4,000 to 371,000 in the week ended Jan. 5, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 48 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a drop to 365,000. The prior week’s figures were revised to 367,000 from an initially reported 372,000.

Barone Picks Up on "Unexpectedly!"

This end of the blogosphere has enjoyed a delicious running joke for much of Barack Obama's presidency...the strange appearance of the word "unexpectedly" in MSM coverage of the anemic economic recovery. Of course, many of us knew that Dear Leader's economic policies would either amount to nothing and/or inhibit economic growth even as they were being debated, so there was nothing unexpected about the result. Still, the joke has only gotten funnier (sadder?) as time has worn on and it becomes clearer and clearer that the man-who-has-never-had-a-real-job-yet-occupies-the-White-House has no clue what he is doing when it comes to the economy. (For our purposes here, we ignore the not-so-outlandish notion that perhaps he knows exactly what he is doing, but that robust economic growth, if it is the result of typical laissez-faire American capitalism, is not his goal.) Anyway, this joke - and the point it reveals - has finally made it somewhat mainstream via the good offices of Michael Barone, who makes it the central theme of this Washington Examiner column. Barone also hints at some other themes that I've touched on: 1) the MSM kicking the propaganda machine into overdrive for Obama's re-election, and 2) the existence of the "job market vigilantes." RTWT.

What? No "Unexpectedly"?

Poor John Kerry.  He truly thought that he singular brand of genius and "finely calibrated diplomacy" would do what hasn't been done by anybody ever.

Alas, no.

Mideast Peace Framework on Life Support as Obama Meets Abbas

This is Bloomberg News, a major devotee of the remarkable genius of all things Obama.  Shouldn't this article have an "unexpectedly" in there somewhere?

Is the MSM Still Flogging "Unexpectedly"? Really?

It's usually Al Hunt's JournoList hack-shop  aka Bloomberg News with this, but today CNBC is getting in on the "unexpectedly" action.

Yes, nearly six years into the dismal and embarrassing economic policy morass of the Obama administration and crappy economic data is still unexpected.

Summers Out? Don't Let the Door Hit You...and Take Romer with You

The buzz is that Larry Summers is leaving the Obama administration. Two points. One, this would score another one for me in my prediction tally, putting me at 3 for 8 not halfway through the year. Two, if Larry leaves it'll be no surprise and I'll not shed a tear - he deserves the boot. There is no possible way that he thought (if he is as bloody smart as Mankiw makes out) the stimulus package, Obama's signature economic policy, would work and he should have counselled against it. Plus there are any number of detrimental economic policies coming out of this administration for which you could say the same thing and he sat and watched these policies roll out. Maybe the politics has run roughshod over economic policy, but if he felt politics was dictating bad policy he should have said so and resigned. He didn't and he therefore owns the policy, and should suffer as the policy fails. Ditto for Romer, who I've said before, has become a joke. The Obama administration has done everything it can to drive businesses to curl up in the fetal position and yet these two still cling to their silly government spending multipler story ignoring the many burdens piling up on businesses that create the jobs. It's embarrassing.

UPDATE: Just a little recent economic statistic: Consumer credit has plunged...apparently unexpectedly...really, unexpectedly???

Unexpectedly!!

Industrial Production Unexpectedly Slips 0.1%; Consensus Called for 0.2% Gain in January

Just like that negative GDP print from a few weeks ago...

Just remember, with Obama in the Oval Office anything not unicorns drinking milk and shitting honey is UNEXPECTED !!!

Unexpectedly!

Sameoldsameold from Bloomberg.
Consumer spending unexpectedly fell in April after the biggest surge in almost five years as incomes slowed. Household purchases, which account for about 70 percent of the economy, dropped 0.1 percent, the first decrease in a year, after a revised 1 percent gain the prior month that was the strongest reading since August 2009, Commerce Department figures showed.

Ya' Knew It...MSM Says "Romney=Bush"

I was waiting for the "Romney=Bush" headlines to start flying fast and furious, and no surprise where I was able to find one, Bloomberg News, the kings of the "unexpectedly" meme.

Welcome to the Party, Powerline!

Some of the bigger and more prominent conservative blogs are noticing something that we've been noting and chronicling for some here at NBfPB - that Bloomberg News, under the auspices of Al Hunt, is a carnival of leftist hackery. Just search on "Hunt" or "Bloomberg News" (or even "unexpectedly") on this blog and you will get copious examples of the "journolist"-style tripe that emanates from that putative "news" source.

Here are the guys at Powerline expressing amazement at a typical instance:
I know Michael Bloomberg is a clown and an aspiring tyrant. I didn’t realize his news service had decided to compete with MSNBC for the title as the most ludicrous news organization on the planet (after Al Jazeera, of course). Check out this headline from yesterday:
House Republicans Set to Defy Obama Are Mostly White Men The core group of Republicans who are pushing the House toward a showdown with the White House over the debt ceiling and government spending is made up of 41 members — all white men except for two.
Except for two? I’m sure if Bloomberg tries hard enough, they’ll find those two are white African-Americans, just as George Zimmerman was a heretofore unknown category of “white Hispanic.” And then there’s this graph:
And about half of them, 19 of 41, have already received campaign donations this year from the political action committee of Wichita-based Koch Industries Inc., controlled by billionaire energy executives Charles Koch and David Koch, who spent millions trying to defeat Obama in 2012.
Seriously? Did a Bloomberg editor really sign off on this?
Welcome to the party Powerline!

BTW, this wasn't the only ridiculous "white people doing it = rank illegitimacy and loathesomeness" theme that Bloomberg News has foisted on us this week. Minor Bloomberg hack Francis Wilkinson picked up a few gun magazines (magazines as in printed publications), saw mostly white people, and declared guns that much more frightening.
Everybody's white. That's the conclusion from a survey of gun magazines I bought the other day. The survey, I admit, was not conducted in accord with the best research practices: I asked the guy at the subway kiosk for as many gun magazines as he could give me before the #4 train pulled in. He handed me three for $17.
All the magazines have ads for, well, guns, and loads of accessories (love the "Sneaky Pete" concealment holster). Naturally, they have stories on guns -- whether "intimidating, big-muzzle looks" or a "Tank-tough Recon Tactical with added strength and reliability for patrol." In addition, there are features on gun life, such as columns in Guns Magazine called "Campfire Tales" and "Odd Angry Shot."
There are pictures of guys with guns, gals with guns, animals with guns, ammo with guns and guns with guns. Curiously absent are pictures of black people with guns, brown people with guns or Asian people with guns. The good guys are white. The bad guys are white. In the Gunworld depicted in these pages, pretty much everyone is white.
Um, OK.  I guess I could say the same thing about magazines on log cabin homes, woodworking, Irish poetry, quilting, or the wines of France.  So what?  And that about sums up the only logical response to much of the drivel that Al Hunt's minions spew at Bloomberg News's relatively new social commentary apparatus...so what.

Bubba Knifes Obama's Bain Crap

Well, dear readers (all 15 of you), I'm back from a not-so-relaxing week of vacation in which I was largely unaware of the news.  But I did pick up a little tidbit about Bill Clinton putting the stake into the heart of Obama's anti-Bain campaign tactic.  I've been saying it and saying it as Clinton surrogates have been pricking this balloon for weeks, but now the Grand Poobah has spoken - dead and buried.  While the Lightworker has Mitt Romney to fear slightly (his campaign strategy and tactics are surprising skeptics as an unexpectedly good combination of  aggressiveness and nimbleness), he has The Bubba to fear all the more.  Stay tuned for more overt Clintonite sabotage of HopenchangeNeedsMoreTime.

Think of this imagery...
I know there must be a scene in some movie somewhere in which the protagonist is running through some gauntlet, like a jungle or something, and getting pelted with darts that, as they accumulate, sap his strength. Ultimately our hero emerges into a clearing only to collapse from the multiple wounds at which point a large dark figure, the mastermind, emerges from just off-stage to finish off our protagonist with a final knife plunge, ensuring and taking credit for the finality of the protagonist's demise. The doomed, dart-ridden hero here is the Lightworker himself and the dark figure is Bubba sticking the knife in once and for all. Cut to black.
UPDATE:  Even Fineman gets it.

It's Official: In Age of Obama, We Must Be Satisfied with Scraps

US expands at brisk pace in 2nd quarter, defying gloom
U.S. economic growth unexpectedly accelerated in the second quarter, laying a firmer foundation for the rest of the year that could bring the Federal Reserve a step closer to cutting back its monetary stimulus. Gross domestic product grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday, stepping up from the first-quarter's downwardly revised 1.1 percent expansion pace.
Are these media dickheads serious? Brisk pace? 1.7% is anemic, lame-ass, sclerotic, Euro-weenie style growth. Have our expectations been so beaten down in the age of Obama that we are satisfied with such scraps?

UPDATE:  Megan McArdle gets it too, obviously.   As do a host of others, people who actually specialize in covering the economy have not been so glowing.

And In Economic News...and Greek Philosophy

Business activity, as measured by the MNI Chicago report, shrank to a multi-year low.  Need I mention this occurred "unexpectedly"?

European unemployment rises to a record 12.1%, an official statistic which, like here, understates actual unemployment.

Just a quick comment: The European Union and the social welfare state model followed to varying degrees,  but universally nonetheless, in Europe was designed to reduce income inequality.  The ostensible purpose was to preserve the social fabric, as inequalities tear at the social fabric, or so lefties tell us.  How is that social fabric holding up in Europe these days?

Plutarch vs. Aristotle.  Who's winning?  Europe is very rich.  It is not a heinous, immoral inequality that is wracking Europe.  It is the plundering of the productive sector.  It's Aristotle hands down.

Geez

Guess what happened? "Unexpectedly" no less. OK, it's not that much fun anymore, it's actually kind of pathetic.

More ObamaCare "Bad Luck"

Less than 12 months ago:  "Meet the Insurer Making Money from ObamaCare."
The big insurers’ troubles have led critics to raise questions about the overall sustainability of the ObamaCare model.
But Molina sees more room for his company to grow. It has already announced plans to expand this year into three more markets.
Today: "Molina to Cut Costs, Eliminate 1,500 Jobs Following Big Loss"
The company said it’s eliminating about 1,500 jobs as part of a restructuring plan that it hopes will save $300 million to $400 million by late next year. In the meantime, Molina withdrew its 2017 earnings outlook. The company also said it will exit money-losing Affordable Care Act markets in Utah and Wisconsin for next year.
Wow.  No doubt "Unexpectedly."
