Semi-Delicious Twist In Gonzaga Students' Ordeal

College students are consistent marks for criminals - they are more often not quite naive, generally affluent, and not likely to pose a risk of violence in their self defense.  Thus this story out of Gonzaga University.  Two students disincentivized a would-be robber/assailant from victimizing them with armed self-defense.  Gonzaga made a big deal of potentially punishing these students, but in the end, only gave them probation.  I suppose this is because the students broke no laws.

In a delicious final twist on the story, it appears the two students have substantial belief in their position and actions, as well as gumption.  Their firearms remain in the hands of campus security, which confiscated them at 2 a.m. after the incident.
That came at 2 a.m. the following day, when the two men awoke to pounding on their bedroom doors.
It was campus security. They entered the home, went upstairs to the bedrooms and hammered on the doors, telling them to give up the weapons, the students said.
The officers confiscated McIntosh’s Glock and Fagan’s shotgun, which he uses for hunting and sport shooting. The guns still haven’t been returned to the men...
and now for the delicious part...
and the two reported them stolen to Spokane police.
I'm not sure what claim the University has for property seizure in this instance. I'm not a lawyer but I am pretty sure that a code of conduct violation does not allow for asset forfeiture.

Full deliciousness comes when Spokane Police are reluctantly forced to force campus security to return the firearms to their owners.
