Park Rangers and Whacko Birds
The petty and vindictive ways that the Obama administration is inflicting maximum annoyance on Americans continue unabated and are well-chronicled. George Will hints that it might be something more than mere political calculation, perhaps a disdain for America and Americans is at work. I buy that argument.
But it is important to remember that Obama may be ordering the ridiculous displays of federal dominance, he isn't out there putting up cones at Mt. Vernon or by Mt. Rushmore. Government workers are. At best they are just following orders, unthinkingly and perhaps wrongly, but following nonetheless because that's what government employees do. They don't think, they follow orders. And because bigger government is its own constituency. That Park Ranger may or may not see a threat to his/her livelihood in small government, but you can be sure that Lois Lerner saw a threat to the IRS's power in Tea Party groups.
The point is we don't know what drives government employees to do these things, but we know that the incentives these people have are 100% aligned against us exercising our liberty and enjoying our lands, parks and sites (all paid for and maintained with our tax dollars, which means they are ours). So, given this, why on Earth would we wish to have more and more of daily life fall under the purview and authority of the federal government?
Hopefully, Obama and the government minions pulling these stunts have miscalculated and have gotten Americans thinking about the wisdom of having the federal government involved in so much. There is a very real chance of that. Ted Cruz may not be such a whacko-bird after all.
