Jim Chanos on FT.com
Great interview with famed short-seller Jim Chanos talking about a variety of things, specifically private equity, here.
Manny Mota...Mota...Mota (OK, not a helpful title...this blog is mostly about Economics, the Markets, Politics...and during the football season also about the New York Giants)

It is interesting that he said one should be long US equity, and that shorting is very difficult. So why specialize in shorting? Too much competition on the long side?
Is Macquarie's model flawed? If it were, then it has the potential to be the mistake of the century.
Shorting IS difficult and these guys don't make great money over time, but they have their heydey ebery so often and there is always some money that wants a short specialist so you CAN make a living at it like Chanos. I imagine though that Chanos's vast fortune is long even if he has his clients' money short!
Don't know enough about Macquerie.
